Apple acknowledges iMac freeze problem

We've had several folks let us know about an apparent problem with the new iMacs, both in post comments and by email tips. There has been an Apple Discussions thread about the issue, which involves random freezes in the new iMac. It apparently causes the interface to completely lock up and requires the user to perform a hard restart to recover. Macworld is reporting that Apple has now admitted that there is a problem. An Apple spokesman told Macworld that they are "tracking down the root cause of this bug, and will issue a software update which corrects it as soon as we can - most likely later this month."

Could be a very simple solution to iMac freezes (or not) When you think about it, the new (white or aluminum) iMacs are basically giant, vertical laptops, ergo, extraordinary heat buildup. You guys out there may already be aware of this app call smcFanControl http://homepage.mac.com/holtmann/eidac/software/smcfancontrol2/index.html
it allows you to tweak your fans (imac has 3; 1 CPU, 1HDD, 1OD) the CPU fan is set ridiculously low for such a tightly packed machine (I think) I have been using SMC for the past couple of days running my CPU at a cooler temp and waddayaknow? No freezing over the last 30hrs(!) I'm going to try and run it for 7 days straight without a reboot and see if I'm not dreaming. I'd say try it, use your judgment; no need to overdo the settings and damage your machine (1400 rpm seems to do the trick) or about 50% speed. It might ease some frustration for now. Basically OK for all Intel Macs (see FAQ's)

I have a G4 Dual 1.25 tower and my clock and immediate icons like Bluetooth and Airport freezes with the Beach Ball of death. Everything works though, even Spotlight. It just freezes in that top right corner. I've been running Leopard for about a week now. It's been doing this for a couple of days. Hopefully it's a quick software update.

I bought an iMac, the new one (Radeon graphics card) as well, trying to avoid all the Windows problems and listening to all those happy Mac users. First of all, it was sold to me with a Hard disc error, repaired with the Repair Disk Utility, but the FREEZING problem, plus a patchwork of different colours on the screen occasionally, kept coming and coming, like 5 times on a row, until I brought it back to the reseller. In Belgium , if it is a software problem one has to pay for the repair even if it happened 3mn after buying the machine! And I am writing this listening (for 20 mn already)to a very nice classical music trying to speak to the technical service. Great...

I recently bought one of those beautiful iMacs - 20" 2.4GHz -, and it has been freezing since day one. Completely random. No need to push it, or any specific app, it just stops!
Last year I bought one of those discoloring macbooks. Oh yeah and it used to switch off as well, but that was solved with a software update.
Love Apple!

I have a Powewrbook G3 (pismo) that recently suffered an HD crash (one I put in, not the Apple supplied one) and other than being slow on most web sites these days (flash usage increases to blame) and starting to dog under Panther, then I have had no issues other than ther pink screen problem that affected most units (and replaced under AppleCare).

My Powerbook G4 15" 1.67GHz dual-layer superdrive (from Oct 2005) however freezes all the time. Once in a while there is the audio stutter problem. The airport drops out and won't reconnect sometimes too. I've read about these on various forums. The pismo was so trouble free. Too bad I can't give the pismo a faster G4 and a bigger screen and 802.11g and USB2.0 etc.

I *just* brought home a 2.0GHz 20" iMac the other day after my unloved PBG4 took a fall (unfortunately it still works, I'd like to bury it). So sad to here that my new machine may still freeze on me! :-( Other rumblings indicate that the patch doesn't always work. Still, I remain hopeful.

extremely frustrating and disappointing with my brand new imac running leopard. After the computer awakes from sleep mode the bar near the clock is completely frozen. The clock reads the time it froze. Very frustrating... should have got the windows machine.

I just purchased a new IMac and I have this problem also. This is my first Apple so yes I am a little up set but I have had the same problems with my new Dell had to send it back to get it running ok. Since I ordered my Leapord Disc I will wait to see if this will fix my problem. I will give Mac a chance because I really like the way it works when it works plus it looks so nice on my desk very eye appealing

I bought my 20" last January and had to take it in for repairs two months later because a CD was stuck and froze up everything. There was no way to eject it. Now iPhoto won't open. The icon just bounces when we try to open it. AND, frequently the computer stops recognizing things that are plugged into USB ports. They simply disappear off the desktop and out of finder. Sometimes unplugging and replugging works. But we never know when we'll lose access to our external hard drive (Which I bought for backups because I was having so many "issues" with the iMac.)

Yes, this happens all the time with my two-week old 20" iMac. I'm not running VMWare, Bootcamp, Parallels or anything out of th ordinary. I have done all the updates.

I just switched to a Mac for the first time because I was tired of having these problems in Windows . I bought into all the "Macs are wonderful & NEVER crash" stuff. Sorry for the vent, but I'm not happy about this.

My 24" iMac freezes as soon as I startup iTunes. All other programs run fine. Tried removing the entire library and re-adding the songs into the library, still get stuck with the same problem. Hope Leopard is going to fix that.
